Devizes Town Council - Friends of Hillworth Park Group

On Tuesday January 14th 2008, about 20 interested local residents ratified a constitution for the Friends of Hillworth Park (FHP). A management committee was appointed for the next 10 months.

The development of the FHP began with a public meeting last September 2007 in Hillworth Park. The Town Council presented their ideas for Park conservation and the improvement of facilities to over 100 people. The proposal to apply for a £1.5 million Heritage Lottery Fund grant in March 2008 was announced.

Meetings in October, November and December 2007 of a group of those interested in a Friends Group led to the formation of the Friends Group in January 2008.

The Council and FHP then hosted the second public meeting in a marquee on February 2nd 2008 between 10 am & 3 pm to consult specifically on the proposed masterplan.

Objectives of the Friends of Hillworth Park are to:

  • Promote the Park as public open space for the social, recreational, heritage, educational and environmental benefit of all members of the community,
  • Improve the future development of facilities in the park and to assist and lobby the Council in their application for a lottery grant,
  • Promote and help interpret its history as an important part of the local heritage,
  • Present the views of people with an interest in Hillworth Park to the Town Council
  • Volunteer in the Park. E.g serve in a café, provide supervision and coaching for games, help in the greenhouses and gardens, become volunteer park warden.

Or to put it concisely:  “to keep the best and improve the rest”.
