An Overview of Your Council

QualityGoldLogo CMYKIn February 2010 the Town Council was successful in complying with the exacting criteria to achieve reaccreditation for Quality Status. This means that the adjudicators acknowledge two key points. The Town Council complies with our legal requirements and secondly that we seek to ensure that the democratic process is inclusive and responsive to the needs of our community.

In December 2015 the Council successfully achieved a Quality Gold Award demonstrating it delivers its services in a way which is at the forefront of best practice by achieving an excellent standard in community governance, community leadership and performance management.


The Town Council comprises of 17 councillors who have been elected to represent the 3 wards of the parish (East, North & South). The Council is administered by a staff of 15 full and part time personnel, these are directed by the Town Clerk, Mrs Sarah Todhunter.

The Town Council has a joint responsibility with Roundway Parish as the Burial Authority for Devizes Cemetery. The Town Clerk is the appointed Clerk to the Burial Authority and this joint organisation is directed by the Devizes and Roundway Joint Burial Committee.

The Devizes Town Council committee structure consists of a Full Council which is supported by three main committees. The council also has a joint responsibility with Roundway Parish Council for the Joint Burial Committee.

The Full Council

Devizes Full Council The Full Council has a statutory duty to convene at least 4 times during the civic year, all members of the Council are summonsed to attend.

Planning Committee

Meetings held fortnightly in the Council Chamber at 7.00 pm. All council members sit on this committee.

Recreation and Property Committee

This committee meets on a six week cycle following the Planning Committee. Ten members of the council sit on this committee.

Community and Civic Resources Committee

This committee meets on a six week cycle following the Planning Committee. Ten members of the council sit on this committee.

Devizes Town Council Surgery

Held in the Town Hall 4 weekly from 6.00 pm to 6.45 pm. Two Councillors of opposing parties will be available for consultation.

Governance Committee

Held in the Town Hall 6 weekly on a Thursday from 7.00 pm. The committee is governed by Devizes and Roundway Parish.

 

Council Meetings are open to the Public. Members of the public are permitted to ask questions of the Council at all meetings at the appropriate time and providing it is relevant to an item being considered on the agenda.
